The Growing Trend of Nurse Health Coaches
If you’ve been a nurse for a while, you’ve probably noticed the profession of nursing has changed. Staffing shortages that have long been an issue, worsened with the Covid-19 pandemic. Nurses have been leaving the profession for many reasons stemming from the pandemic, but as stressful as working in healthcare has been, there are some positives. The pandemic provided many nurses with an entrepreneurial mindset the nudge they needed to jump into entrepreneurship.
Nurses are a natural fit for business ownership. They’re intelligent, resourceful, and no strangers to hard work. The nursing profession is known for its demanding hours and high stress levels, so it's not surprising that many nurses are drawn to the idea of enjoying the flexibility and control over their time they just can’t get working for someone else. Leveraging their wealth of knowledge, nurse entrepreneurs are finding innovative ways to give back to their community and make a difference in the lives of those they serve, all while creating more balanced lives for themselves.
There’s a huge variety of businesses nurses are building. New entrepreneurs are opening their own IV hydration and nurse concierge businesses, becoming legal consultants, nurse writers, and health coaches. Some are starting wellness retreats, and many also join forces with established multilevel marketing companies which make getting started quicker and easier than starting a business from scratch all on their own.
A Closer Look at Health Coaching
If I asked you why you wanted to become a nurse, you’d probably answer that you wanted to help people. But over time many nurses find that the reality of working within the corporate healthcare system is leaving them feeling they can't help people in the way they want to. This is a frustrating time for nurses who are afraid to walk away from careers they've built, while still feeling the push to make a change.
Our healthcare system doesn’t afford the time it would take to treat patients as whole people. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever been to your doctor for ongoing gut issues, for example, and were simply prescribed a medication or set up to be scoped without looking into root causes. You probably weren’t asked how well you were sleeping, or how well you were coping with the demands of your life, or whether you were in a healthy relationship, all of which have a huge influence on our physical health and wellbeing.
Health Coaches Help Clients with Behavioral Change
Health coaches have the flexibility to look at their clients as whole people, considering nutrition, stress levels, coping skills, and state of mind in helping their clients achieve optimal health. They're able to provide the kind of individualized attention and support that can be so effective in promoting lasting behavioral change. Helping clients reach their wellness goals through this holistic approach can be very rewarding for nurses who thrive on helping others.
Then there’s the appeal of enjoying more flexibility and control over their own time. Imagine being able to set your own schedule and work from home while caring for young ones. Or poolside on a tropical island, if that’s more your style!
What Kind of Business Help is Out There?
Good news! More than ever before nurses wanting to jump into entrepreneurship have resources to help them make the leap. Free resources such as nurse entrepreneur Facebook groups where nurses share what they’ve learned on their path to business ownership, what’s working and what’s not. Newbies can reach out to the more experienced to get questions answered and find support and accountability in the virtual community. Because many new-to-business nurses are looking to the online space, online business coaches abound to help them get started. There are also many established health coaches who offer help to newbie health coaches, sharing their knowledge of what’s worked best in their own businesses. YouTube is also a great place to look for how-to’s on everything from finding your coaching niche to pricing your offers to attracting clients.
There's no shortage of help out there for nurses who want to start their own business. You don't have to do it alone. But no matter what path you choose, always remember that YOU have the power to make things happen. So get out there and start making your dream a reality!
